Rangiroa or Ra’iroa, which means “huge sky”, is the second largest atoll in the world in terms of the surface area of its lagoon. The latter constitutes a true inland sea, capable of containing the entire island of Tahiti in its center.
Its inhabitants live permanently on 2 of the hundreds of Motu (islets of white sand) which make up this atoll. Rangiroa has 7 villages: Tiputa, Avatoru, Ohotu, Taeo’o, Fenuaroa, Otepipi and Tevaro. The daily life of its inhabitants is punctuated by pearl farming, tourism, fishing and copra.
A school dedicated to pearl farming techniques has been established in Rangiroa as well as a research center on pearl oysters, to promote the development of this activity.
Rangiroa is known worldwide for its lagoon revealing exceptionally abundant marine fauna: dolphins, sharks, reef fish, whales in season, etc.
Described as a natural aquarium, Commander Cousteau classified this atoll as the most beautiful and richest site in the world.
Setting out to discover the marvelous colors of its lagoon is simply dazzling. Nautical rides aboard a glass-bottom boat are exquisite, and excursions to the island of reefs and pink sands or deep-sea fishing trips are incredible.
This true divers’ paradise offers a magical spectacle of its marine life. What a joy to swim to meet red mullets, napoleons, Manta or leopard rays, trevally or even dolphins.
At the entrance to the Tiputa pass, it is worth admiring, at a depth of around fifty meters, a wall of around a hundred sharks which forms when the current is incoming. The sharks then remain motionless, and it is possible to contemplate them easily.
Thanks to the Blue Lagoon excursion, it is possible to visit the enchanting bird island, in order to observe multiple species, some of which are rare today in their natural state.
Other sites are also recommended such as the church of Otepipi or the Marae (ancient sacred open-air temple) of the Motu (islets of white sand) in the northwest of the coral ribbon.
Last but not least, as incredible as it may seem, there is a unique vineyard in the world to discover. It is located in the middle of a coconut grove where vines grow on the edge of the lagoon.
Two harvests produced annually are to be enjoyed at all costs. The winery is located in the center of the village of Avatoru, the grapes are transported there by boat. Among the grape varieties that were selected and are currently produced in Rangiroa, we find Carignan and Muscat de Hamburg.
