Ua Pou

Ua Pou is renowned for the dramatic basalt peaks depicted on the 500 XPF banknote.

Ua Pou Airport is located in the Aneou Valley. The landing of the Twin Otter is special but it is worth experiencing, sensations guaranteed. It is also possible to reach Ua Pou by boat thanks to the Aranui.

Hakahau, the administrative center of the island

The main Hakahau valley is the administrative center and brings together the main businesses of the island. It is at the Hakahau quay that the boats dock. The inhabitants wait there for the goods provided by the Aranui, once every two weeks.

Hakahau also has a magnificent church. It is the meeting place for the population of this valley who sing melodiously in the Marquesan language. The people of Ua Pou are extremely welcoming, not hesitating to approach visitors and help them.

Hikes and natural discoveries

Hiking and horse riding allow you to discover the incredible beauty of this exceptional island. Simone Bay, located about fifteen minutes by car from Hakahau, is enchanting. Its long beach allows for superb walks to the bottom of the cliffs.

The Hoho’i valley and its treasures

You should definitely not miss the Hoho’i valley. All downhill, this valley leads to a magnificent bay where it is still possible to find “flower stone” pebbles. The latter is a treasure that can only be found in 2 places in the world, including Hoho’i. Some artisans from this valley work this stone, naturally flowery, to make magnificent jewelry of inestimable value.

Hoho’i also watches over the only Mea’e (ancient open-air sacred temple) of Ua Pou, which has been restored and hosted the very famous Marquesas Islands Arts Festival in 2007, an event not to be missed.
